Consumer disputes are complaints about conduct that does not involve an issue of unsatisfactory professional conduct or professional misconduct.
Consumer disputes might be about:
- lack of communication or rudeness
- costs (the Legal Services Commission does not have the power to resolve costs disputes. The Commissioner may investigate whether or not a law practice has complied with their obligations under the Legal Profession Act 2007 (the Act) in providing proper costs disclosure).
- liens (a legal practitioner’s right to keep a client’s property until the client pays the legal practitioner’s fees and disbursements).
