    Testimonials from participating law firms

    The Commission routinely seeks feedback from the principals of law firms which take part in our Ethics Checks for Law Firms surveys soon after their firms have completed a survey. We ask them to give us their feedback anonymously in the first instance to encourage them to be frank, and we ask them as part of that exercise if they would be prepared to 'go on the record'.

    The workplace culture check

    We invited 15 volunteer law firms to participate in our workplace culture check in February - March 2009 and all 15 firms including 3 incorporated legal practices accepted. The firms assigned themselves a secret code to preserve their anonymity.

    A total of 478 people from the 15 firms completed the survey and notably 73% of them told us (in response to one of the closing survey questions) that they found completing the survey to be either very helpful or helpful in assessing the ethical culture of their firm. That information shows up in the survey results.

    We asked the 15 senior partners / legal practitioner directors who acted as their firm’s survey managers to complete a feedback survey after they had digested the survey results 14 of them responded. Their feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

    The complaints management systems check

    The Commission required 35 incorporated legal practices to complete the Complaints Management Systems Check as a form of compliance audit in May-June 2009 and a further 30 incorporated legal practices in April-May 2010. A total of 670 people from those 65 firms completed the survey and 66% of them told us (in response to one of the closing survey questions) they found it to be either helpful or very helpful in assessing their firm’s complaints management system and only 4% said that they found it unhelpful. That information shows up in the survey results.

    We asked the legal practitioner directors of the 65 firms which participated to complete a feedback survey after they had digested the survey results 32 of them responded. Their feedback was hugely encouraging also.

    The billing practices check (for medium to large law firms)

    We wrote in April 2010 to the managing partners / legal practitioner directors of all 172 Queensland law firms with 7 or more practising certificate holders to invite them to complete the billing practices survey by 30 April. A total of 40 firms accepted the invitation, and 503 people from those firms and 14 interested individuals completed the survey - a total of 517 people of whom 371 identified themselves as lawyers.

    We asked the managing partners/legal practitioner directors of the 40 participating firms to complete a feedback survey after we posted the results and they had time to digest them and 7 of them completed the survey by the closing date of 28 June. Their feedback was once again encouraging - all 7 of them told us that participating in the survey was a useful exercise for their firm and 6 of them& said it had brought issues to their attention where they needed to make changes (and just as usefully, all 7 of them said it brought some of their firm's strenghts to their attention).
