Meet the Commissioner

John Briton was appointed as Queensland’s first Legal Services Commissioner in May 2004.

Mr Briton has a strong background in dispute management, having operated his own consultancy business, Dispute Management Services, for seven years prior to his appointment as Commissioner. He has extensive experience investigating and negotiating consumer and workplace complaints and designing complaint handling systems and processes.

Mr Briton has worked as Queensland's Anti Discrimination Commissioner and State Director of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission.   He has also worked as a Senior Advocate and later as Deputy Public Advocate in Victoria's Office of the Public Advocate, where he investigated and reconciled alleged abuse, exploitation and neglect of older people and people with disability, and before that in various capacities in residential services settings for people with intellectual disability.  He has an honours degree in philosophy from the University of Queensland.
